it s 5:00 a.m. in the east. let s get started. first, it s a super soaker. tropical storm hammering florida with extreme weather. the slow-moving snow sith off the coast of alabama and the florida panhandle. the outer bands whipping up dangerous surf and triggering this huge water spout off juneau beach. also spawn ag deadly tornado in florida as it drenches the coast. officials say a woman was found dead in a home in venus located in the middle of the state between port st. lucie and sarasota. a child in one of the damaged homes was also injured and taken by the hospital. people say they were blind-sided by the twisters. i got my wife and my dog put them in a hallway there and said it s coming. about that time it started blowing real hard. it happened real fast, in a matter of 30 seconds. we saw a bunch of wind pick up. shoved into the bathroom. scared half to death. it was pretty traumatic. meteorologist alexandra steele is tracking the storm for us. slow and fi ....

Actually put some equipment out there that was going to monitor the wave action and the power of the waves. i m afraid that that washed away along with the end of the pier. and that was kerry sanders earlier today. and you heard him mentioning the waves. and i think it s worth noting that, again, we told you a short time ago that there was another fatality because of high waves, on new smyrna beach we ve learned it happened in florida, it was a fatality. we heard it was a surfer, but he was actually standing in shallow water, just standing there, a huge wave came and tossed him, and they were unable to revive him. so, again, many dangers from this hurricane continuing. we re going to continue to follow all of it as it continues to move up the east coast. you re watching msnbc. ....

You know, we ve got the back end still to come through. but the really good news is the lack of damage. there s a little street flooding, there have been some fences knocked down, but no real extensive damage. the power lines and the power poles still standing, even though the power is out. the cell phone system is still working. we ve checked homes that do and do not have shutters. those that have no shutters appear to be just fine, again. this is just a front end of irene. we still have the back end to come through here, and then there s the coastal erosion. really, it looks like, thus for a, the most damage is from the waves, the actual surf action. i ve seen some waves out here that have been averaging around 8 to 10 feet. we saw a few come in, rogue waves, up to about 17 feet. and clearly, it was in the dark, but overnight, some very powerful pounding waves came in. and as you noted, took out the last section of the pier here. the u.s. geological survey had ....
