KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Health Dr Azra Pechuho on Friday warned residents that they must take extra precaution in the wake of first the British and now the South African and Brazilian coronavirus variants being detected in the province.
In a video message released by the Health and Population Welfare Department of Sindh, Dr Pechuho said that in a genomic study carried out by Aga Khan University Hospital of 13 samples, 10 were found to have the UK variant, one had the South African variant and one had the Brazilian variant.
“So you can understand the nature of the emergency, the pressure that it can cause on hospitals. The UK variant is one that spreads very fast. It has an infectivity rate of 60 percent and a fatality rate of 68 percent,” she said, adding that the fatality rates of the South African and Brazilian variants are also “very high”.

Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazl Pechuho has confirmed the detection of the South African and Brazilian variants of the coronavirus in Karachi. Dr Pechuho said on Friday that the variants, which were more lethal than the original Wuhan variant, were detected in samples collected by Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).
In a video message, the health minister said AKUH had collected 13 samples for a genomic study and of those, 10 were found infected with the United Kingdom variant of the coronavirus - the presence of which was confirmed in Karachi in an earlier genomic study - two were found infected with the South African variant and the one remaining was infected with the Brazilian variant.

The UK, South African, and Brazilian variants of COVID-19 have been found in Sindh, provincial Minister of Health and Population Welfare, Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, has confirmed.
According to details, Agha Khan University (AKU) Hospital performed a genomic study on 13 different samples of Coronavirus. The UK variant was detected in 10 samples while South African and Brazilian samples were detected in 1 sample each. The original strain of COVID-19 was detected in 1 sample.

In a video message, Dr. Azra termed the development as alarming and said that these variants have high transmissibility and fatality rates, adding that these strains are not vaccine responsive either because efficacies of COVID-19 vaccines against these variants have not been determined yet.

Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho informed on Monday that the South African and Brazilian variants of the novel coronavirus disease have been found in samples taken by the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH).
In a video message posted on the Sindh Health and Population Welfare Department s official Twitter account, the provincial health minister disclosed that the AKUH collected 13 samples to perform genomic study confirming the variants of the virus.

Sindh health minster warns residents that after the UK coronavirus variant, the South African and Brazilian variants have also been detected in the province.
Warns the latter two are not vaccine responsive and so someone who catches COVID-19 via one of these strains is likely to fall very ill.
Urges people to restrict movement; if you do not do Eid shopping this year, it won t be that big of a deal .
