A year after his death, Garth Griffin's memory remains strong among Islanders

Garth Griffin died at home on Monday, Jan. 27, 2020. He was 66 years old. Here is Julie Lane’s story from last January on his life and legacy.
It was mere hours after Garth Griffin’s untimely death that word reached many Islanders who were shocked that a man they had known and loved was gone.
He was hired as Shelter Island Recreation Director in May 1981 and held the post until his retirement in the summer of 2017.
Perhaps Jay Card Jr. captured it best at Mr. Griffin’s funeral Saturday afternoon saying, “I just didn’t know our days were numbered.”
Naming men who have made him a better man, Mr. Card noted several have already passed on. “I regret that I never had the presence of mind to thank them for their love and friendship when I had the chance . . . especially G,” he said. “I believe in my heart that he knows it now. Garth wove himself into this community like a bright red thread in a giant tapestry.” ....

With a birdie on the 72nd hole, Will Thomson claimed the 96th New York State Men’s Amateur Championship by a stroke at Irondequoit Country Club.

Thomson fired a tournament-low 67 in the fourth and final round on Thursday afternoon, and finished at 7-under 281.
Finishing in second was Chris Blyth of Mendon Golf Club, who pieced together a 69 in the afternoon and ended up at 282. ....

Jake Card declared co-champion in Florida tournament - Shelter Island Reporter

Jay (Jake) Card III, called by many the finest golfer to come out of Shelter Island, has notched another significant victory to add to his many triumphs.
The PGA pro has been declared co-champion of the Indian Spring Country Club (Fla.) with fellow pro Jeremy Gandon of France. A playoff was canceled because of darkness.
Jake came into the clubhouse with a six under par 66, the identical score carded by the Frenchman. Each golfer recorded seven birdies and a bogey, and split the first prize money, each pocketing $775 apiece from the $4,875 purse.
Next up is the 16th annual Tour Championship supported by Joey D Golf. The tournament will be held at the Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter, Fla. Golfers will be gunning for a winning prize of $10,000. ....
