FAIRFIELD, CT Fairfield officials tackled a question last week that has loomed in the background of many public hearings and zoning meetings in recent years: What s the best way to bring more affordable housing to town?
Legislators and local experts discussed the issue during a virtual town hall held Wednesday in the wake of several proposed zoning changes out of Hartford, which have received vocal pushback from some in Fairfield. About 70 people logged on to the event.
It s a very emotionally charged issue, said state Sen. Tony Hwang, R-28, who spoke at a rally last month in Fairfield opposing the zoning bills and argued Wednesday the changes were based on what he called a false premise that the state has authority over local zoning and planning. ....

Carver intersection design under review for Urban Renewal Plan

CARVER – The redesign of the intersection of Route 58 and Montello Street as part of the North Carver Urban Renewal Plan may be completed by the end of this year.
A new check for $100,000 from Route 44 Development LLC for roadway improvements as part of the mixed-use business development has been submitted to the town, according to Planning Director Jim Walsh.
The $100,000 was requested by Walsh as part of Route 44 Development’s commitment to provide matching funds for the $3.2 million MassWorks infrastructure grant the town received in December 2019 for traffic improvements, including a new traffic signal at the critical intersection. ....

CARVER – It’s land that many people outside of the Carver Redevelopment Authority may have forgotten about, but it’s still for sale.
With development underway nearby, the Redevelopment Authority is readvertising the property at 90 Forest St., at the corner of North Main and Forest streets, on the recommendation of Planning Director Jim Walsh. A new sign will be posted to mark the site.
The asking price is $175,000.
Redevelopment Authority Chairman Sharon Clarke said the property has been listed in the Central Register, an online publication in which state, county and local government agencies can advertise land, but agreed that maybe the one acre will be more attractive now. ....
