Says there s more interference from waves, passing ships and inclement weather that makes isolating the pings hard sgler this show it is frequencies in the ocean. if the pinger were nearby we d see a sharp spike at the pinger frequency. time is not on the investigator s side. the batteries on the pingers only last about 30 days. if the pingers fail searchers will likely turn to sonar. this is the sonar. this is what they ll use to map the sea floor once they have an idea where the debris site is or to search for the debri brooe site if the pinger can t find it. reporter: like hide phones sonars work better where the search area can be far more broad. coleman says in shallow water the search can move more quickly. shown far is showing us what s at the bottom right? exactly. emitting the sound. as the sound comes back off the bottom it s interpreting it in order to draw a 3d image of what s on the sea floor. that image will help ....

Hydrogr hydrogropher. they re going to use to this search for that pinger locater. reporter: how far can it hear? about five miles. reporter: but unlike the depths in the indian ocean where malaysia flight 370 disappeared, the java sea is shallow, running only about 80 to 100 feet deep. while it is easier to operate hydrophones at this depth, coleman says there s more interference closer to the surface from waves from passing ships. this shows the frequencies in the ocean. if the pinger were nearby, there would be a sharp spike right at that pinger frequency. reporter: time is not on the investigators side. the batteries on the pingers only last about 30 days. but if the pingers fail, searchers will likely turn to sonar. this is the sonar. this is what they ll use to map the sea floor to search for the ....

Vehicle. david, why are we still on 30 days for black box batteries, why don t they last longer? that is the biggest disappointment. we shouldn t have that deadline at all. five days is replaced for the french authorities to have it send out to be 90 days. to date there has not been anything done yet. there is something much bigger that is broken, that is the international aviation authority for not taking action. there were several recommendations, not only the number of days but the frequency that would allow you to hone in, when you pick up the pinger frequency, you can almost triangulate, why we re having to do this at this point falls scarily on the shoulders of the regulators. john, looking at what we know at this point. as a pilot, what sort of questions does it raise for you? ....

Pings detected by the ocean shield ship were actually at 33.3 kilohertz. that s a lower frequency than 37.5 kilohertz. does this mean this can t be the plane or is there some other explanation and it still could be? it definitely still could be. what you have with the pinger frequency can be affected by temperature of the water, the depth, the pressure, the current and actually the battery life and actual orientation of the pinger on the floor. all those could affect it. so definitely could be. chris, just to follow. we were told that the batteries on these beacons would be out of juice by now, they only last 30 days, obviously it s been 32. how could that explain the change in frequency and do these batteries ever last longer than 30 days? well the batteries are required to last 30 days even if they are aged or older batteries in there craft. ....

Optimistic right now. they re trying to recreate that sound. the past 10 or 12 hours, they have been unable to so, even though there s a 24 hour a day search under way. my suspicion is, and this is my fear, i m sure a fear of a lot of others that either the two batteries are very, very weak, the weaker the batteries, the less the beacon sound goes out, or the batteries may have died. they re only supposed to last what, about 30 days, now we re in day 31 or 32. what s your sense? you know, we could have caught it on the bitter end of the battery life. that s interentirely possible. they re in deep water. varying temperatures. very cold down there. it s possible we may have caught them at just the end and may be very lucky. the pinger frequency gets stronger the closer you are to those black boxes, right? yes. the intensity gets stronger. the frequency remains the same. so if they were hearing for two hours that signal coming out, what they suspect is one of the black boxes, it s ....
