As the conductor of the Columbus Symphony’s Picnic With the Pops concerts held each summer at the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons, Stuart Chafetz has teamed with artists ranging from Kool & the Gang to members of the Best Damn Band in the Land. Last year, of course, the Commons was quiet: Picnic With the Pops, like most summertime entertainment events, was called off. Yet, in reflecting on what he most missed about last year’s canceled series, Chafetz pointed to a non-musical moment that comes before a single note is played. “There’s this sort of side backstage entrance that’s connected to the Ohio Theatre,” said Chafetz, the symphony’s principal pops conductor. “You walk out onto the stage. . and then you kind of peer behind the percussion section and you look out: There’s just this sea of people.” ....
This summer, the Columbus Symphony will pull out sheet music for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Tiny Dancer” and “When a Man Loves a Woman” not to mention “Hang On Sloopy.” The music of the British band Queen and Elton John will be played at this summer’s edition of Picnic With the Pops, the schedule for which was announced Friday. The symphony will also team with singer-songwriter Michael Bolton and the Ohio State University marching band. All concerts will take place at the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons, East Rich and South High streets. The season will kick off June 12 with the symphony pairing with a tribute band to perform the music of Queen. ....

I vowed that I was going to watch The Wire like it was my damn job and ran to my local branch of the Nashville Public Library to check out the DVDs of the entire series, smug in my knowledge that Iâd probably be able to sit on them for months while the libraries were closed. The joke was on me when I opened the box for Season 3, excited to see what was next for Det. McNulty and Stringer Bell, and discovered the disc was missing. Sure, I could have just streamed it, but by that time, Iâd lost the momentum. At least Iâve still got somet ....
For its 2021-22 season, the Columbus Symphony will celebrate two momentous occasions: first, the 70th anniversary of the organization’s founding in 1951; and second, its emergence from the current, pandemic-altered season. Although a reduced version of the symphony has been giving a steady stream of limited-capacity concerts in the Ohio Theatre this season, symphony leaders acknowledge that audiences expect big and bold concerts in the season ahead. “We were going to do the very best we could in every circumstance, but we also have been saying for a good six months that we were not going to limp out of COVID that we were going to burst out of COVID,” Executive Director Denise Rehg said. “That is what the season is meant to do.” ....
