Stanley Bergman: Two Women You Should Know #BlackHistoryMonth LinkedIn 2/26/2021 It’s amazing what you can learn when the opportunity presents itself. As Black History Month comes to a close, I wanted to reflect on what I learned about the extraordinary contributions to American life made by Black professionals who deserve to be better known. Given that Henry Schein is a health care company, I focused my journey by wondering who were the first Black women to become a dentist and a physician in the U.S. The answers are astonishing and inspiring. IN DENTISTRY Our nation’s first Black female dentist was Dr. Ida Gray Nelson Rollins. Born in Tennessee in 1867 and orphaned in her early teens, Ida was then raised by her aunt, Caroline Gray, who could not read or write. Aunt Caroline later moved her children and Ida to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Ida enrolled in high school.
