Now streaming online, Changemakers, a collection of 20 original, two-minute plays and musicals inspired by community leaders, activists, and front-line workers who have fought for change over the course of the past year.

Thu, 04/29/2021 LAWRENCE Through a series of 20 short scenes and songs, Changemakers shares stories inspired by community leaders, activists and front line workers who have fought for change. This collaborative work, written by commissioned playwrights working alongside students, makes its world premiere Thursday, April 29, as the University Theatre’s season finale. Changemakers  showtimes are 7:30 p.m. April 29-30 and 2:30 p.m. May 2 online and for a limited, in-person audience. Changemakers was co-written by members of the cast in collaboration with 20 professional playwrights commissioned for this production. Among the KU alumni playwrights are Bill Russell and James Still. This production is directed by Markus Potter, assistant professor of performance, and Darci Jens Fulcher, visiting assistant director, with musical direction and live accompaniment by Ryan McCall.

Fri, 02/19/2021 LAWRENCE During the Great Depression, Orson Welles’ The Mercury Theatre on the Air brought new, exciting dramas to communities that couldn’t otherwise afford to attend theatre. Fast-forward to the current pandemic, with theatres mostly closed and so many people out of work. The University of Kansas Department of Theatre & Dance Chair Henry Bial hopes to provide audiences with similar inspiration through Jayhawk Theatre on the Air, a live, script-in-hand reading series presented in radio-drama style and livestreamed. Bial curated the Jayhawk Theatre on the Air in conversation and collaboration with the playwrights, including two at KU. “In this time of scarcity, this series celebrates abundance: the wealth of great stories in the American theatre, the wide range of talents among KU’s students and faculty, and the tremendous possibilities of engaging a broader, more diverse audience through livestreaming,” Bial said. “By doing less – no
