washington journal is live at 7:00 a.m. eastern on c-span. next on american history tv, brian craig miller of emporia state university discusses confederate general john bell hood s campaign into tennessee in the fall of 1864, resulting in the almost total destruction of his army. this event is from the gettysburg college civil war institute s annual summer conference that took place in june. it s about an hour and 15 minutes. good afternoon. i m peter carmichael, the director of the civil war institute. also professor of history here at gettysburg college. it s my pleasure to introduce brian craig miller. brian is associate professor and associate chair of history at emporia state university in eastern kansas. he teaches a variety of courses in 19th century u.s., including the civil war, of course. he is the author of several books. john bell hood and the fight for civil war memory published by the university of tennessee. and he has recently edited a punishment ....
i appreciate that. i can just look at kevin if i need. kevin, you teach, right? in addition to blogging.er, in sorry, pete. blo and so,gg you re used to being front of unruly crowds.g and you may also have some experience with a particularly nerve wracking speaking engagement. one of those engagements wrote you re not quite sure where the subject matter of your talk fits with the event at hand. and then, adding to that, you learn that perhaps, i don t know, c-span is going to broadcast your talk live on television because, hey, you know, live television.ppen this stills, happens apparently. but if you ve done any public ae speaking, you also know that yu moment where a that sense of re calm settles over you. i know that pete knows that because i ve now watched him speak beautifully a number of times in the past couple of days. i just want to let you know, e this s not happening to me right now. and so, without further ado. as many of you may know, on november 29th, 1864 ....
war, is the war in 1864. good morning. if you could all take a seat, please. i am pete carmichael, professor of history here at gettysburg college. i am also the director of the civil war institute. it is my pleasure this morning to introduce brooks simpson, the asu foundation professor of history at arizona state university. he is a historian of 19th century america. the american presidency as well as the civil war and reconstruction. he has written extensively about ulysses s. grant. he is the author of let us have peace:. s grant and the politics of reconstruction, released in 1991. he is also the author of u.s. grant: triumph over adversity. that earned distinction as a new york times notable book of the year. just recently, he has published and edited a boeing by the library of america a volume by the library of america, voices of the civil war. sharesy brooks stephen brooks shares. he has given talks focusing on the war and the east and we know he is ....

[laughter] the person this photograph, douglas southall freeman, there is no risk of his work falling by the wayside. he wasn t gotten for of her robert e. lee and wrote 4 volumes on how polish and the 1930 s and he received a political price. e lee in the 1930 s and he received a pulitzer prize . all of his work is beautifully written. equal to bruce catton s. he did incredible research. douglas southall freeman was enamored with the general. in fact, he admitted to this. it is not an anecdote. every morning as he walked to work, he would salute the statue of robert e lee and richmond. a little odd i would say. nonetheless, if he had great admiration ....
every night. [laughter] in this photograph, there is no risk of his work falling by the wayside. for freeman was the bag or the biographer and wrote for albums on robert e lee. he did three volumes on the army of northern virginia entitled these lieutenants. all good work beautifully written. tohad froze that is equal british cadence. he did great original research. he was very much enamored with the general. he admitted to this. every morning as he walked to work, he would salute the statue of robert e lee in richmond. that s a little odd but nonetheless, he had great admiration for the general. and he was a professional historian. freeman grew up in virginia. his undergraduate at university of richmond and went on to johns hopkins where he got his phd. did not enter the academy. he decides to work for a living was a journalist with two different papers in richmond. his historical output alone is amazing. this should remind you of our conversation with gordon wrig ....
