The shutdown of Eastern Cape roads by taxi operators over four-month payment delays for scholar transport services, which caused chaos in the province yesterday, has been suspended. This after a meeting in East London between taxi council leaders and provincial transport leaders, including Oscar Mabuyane who is said to have joined telephonically.
With campaigning gaining momentum before the hotly contested May 29 election, two political parties in the Eastern Cape have ruffled the feathers of taxi bosses after reportedly failing to cough up for ferrying members to their rallies. The EFF and uMkhonto weSizwe are entangled in pay disputes which have left operators frustrated.

Twenty-five people were killed and many others injured inroad accidents in the EasternCape over the Easter weekend. Dozens of people were arrested in Buffalo City Metro and King Sabata Dalindyebo local municipality for offences ranging from drunk driving and obstruction, to driving an unlicensed motor vehicle, jumping a red traffic light, overloading and driving without a valid driver’s licence.
