So we shouldn’t have been surprised by how he reacted Monday to the release of an investigative report from a Jacksonville City Council committee examining the failed sale of JEA.
Between February and December 2020, the committee and its special counsel interviewed dozens of witnesses and reviewed more than 600,000 documents.

But the yawning pay gap between that post and top jobs at other Jacksonville independent authorities has been shrinking, a Times-Union review of public employees’ top salaries in 2020 shows.
Retired JEA CEO Paul McElroy set the paycheck standard in May, when he netted a $560,373 salary for temporarily returning to bring order to an agency convulsed by local and federal investigations involving ex-CEO Aaron Zahn and the failed bid to sell the taxpayer-owned utility. When Jay Stowe succeeded McElroy as the utility’s permanent CEO in late November, he signed a $560,000-a-year contract, too. ....

The 16-year city utility executive was rehired in May to ‘right the ship’ after an attempt to sell it.
The JEA board of directors honored interim Managing Director and CEO Paul McElroy during its monthly meeting Dec. 11 with an official send-off.
McElroy leaves the city-owned utility after a seven-month tenure where he purged senior executives involved in the last year’s attempt to sell JEA.
He worked to reduce the size of JEA’s next corporate headquarters building Downtown and settled the utility’s legal fight with Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia over a purchase power agreement for nuclear Plant Vogtle. ....
