Between 1971 and 1974 one of the most popular ways to reach Portugal was aboard the Eagle car ferry.
With fares from Southampton to Lisbon starting at £23 including meals, and an extra £6 for a car, its popularity is no surprise.
The MS Eagle introductory brochure covered all bases by calling her “the new cruise liner car ferry” and, operating a Southampton-Lisbon-Tangier service, she sailed direct to Portugal, one of the most fashionable holiday destinations of the time, until the 1974 revolution put a temporary stop to tourism. The recessionary aftermath of the OPEC oil crisis in 1973 did little to help, fuel costs increased dramatically. ....

I came to live in Portugal in November 1973, just in time to experience first-hand the famous ‘Carnation’ revolution, so named as soldiers put carnations in the barrels of their rifles to indicate this was a peaceful movement.
This revolution is probably almost unique in recent world history, why, because the military took over, not unusual, but they kept their word (very unusual in world terms) and handed power back to the people exactly as promised.
