Binge-drinking rapist Paul Devaney jailed for 18-and-a-half-years
A binge-drinking Carlisle “monster” who raped two women has been jailed for 18-and-a-half years.
Paul Devaney left one of his victims sobbing after continuing a sick sex attack despite her desperate attempts to push him away.
Carlisle Crown Court heard depraved Devaney later told her “sorry”, and added flippantly: “Drink in, wits out.”
Described as being a “heavy drinker”, the 55-year-old, of no fixed address, admitted three counts of rape and was sentenced this afternoon. The court was told he raped one of the women twice, once while she was aged under 16.
In moving impact statements read during the court hearing, both women spoke of the massive psychological impact with each having been prescribed anti-depressants while seeking to cope with the aftermath of Devaney’s shocking crimes. ....

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said: “Sexual abuse can have a devastating impact on children which can last into adulthood, and we trust the women Devaney assaulted are receiving the support they need.
“We would urge anyone who has experienced sexual abuse, no matter when it happened, to speak out and seek support, and we hope the victims in this case can find some solace knowing Devaney has faced justice for his sickening behaviour.”

A detective who investigated the case of a rapist who was jailed for more than 18 years has welcomed the sentence.
Detective Sergeant Chris Burton said: “This is a great result and I hope this brings some closure to the victims in the cases.
“Devaney showed no remorse for his actions and took advantage of his victims when they were vulnerable.
“Rape and sexual offences have a huge impact on victims and their families.
“Whilst every case is different and the outcome of an investigation can never be predicted, Cumbria Constabulary is committed to thoroughly and compassionately investigating all reports of rape and serious sexual offences. ....

A heavy-drinking monster who raped two women has been jailed for 18 and a half years.
Paul Devaney, from Carlisle, admitted three counts of rape, including one committed when his victim was under 16.
Carlisle Crown Court heard he left one woman sobbing after continuing the sex attack despite her desperate attempts to push him away.
