Binge-drinking rapist Paul Devaney jailed for 18-and-a-half-years A binge-drinking Carlisle âmonsterâ who raped two women has been jailed for 18-and-a-half years. Paul Devaney left one of his victims sobbing after continuing a sick sex attack despite her desperate attempts to push him away. Carlisle Crown Court heard depraved Devaney later told her âsorryâ, and added flippantly: âDrink in, wits out.â Described as being a âheavy drinkerâ, the 55-year-old, of no fixed address, admitted three counts of rape and was sentenced this afternoon. The court was told he raped one of the women twice, once while she was aged under 16. In moving impact statements read during the court hearing, both women spoke of the massive psychological impact with each having been prescribed anti-depressants while seeking to cope with the aftermath of Devaneyâs shocking crimes. ....
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said: âSexual abuse can have a devastating impact on children which can last into adulthood, and we trust the women Devaney assaulted are receiving the support they need. âWe would urge anyone who has experienced sexual abuse, no matter when it happened, to speak out and seek support, and we hope the victims in this case can find some solace knowing Devaney has faced justice for his sickening behaviour.â Children can contact Childline on 0800 1111.
