In detail, this year saw the triumph of Vinothraj PS s Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese, Helena van der Meulen and Ilse Hughan, provided the following supporting statement: “In the midst of many admirable and ambitious works, the jury was blown away by a seemingly simple and humble film we fell in love with instantly. Creating maximum impact with a minimum of means, the filmmaker reaches his goal with the same conviction and determination as his main characters. In this first feature directed by the actor, which was unveiled in the 49th International Film Festival Rotterdamâs Tiger competition, the rookie filmmaker leaps like a seasoned tightrope walker from one wire to the next (after carefully fine-tuning the details of the story and the design of his seemingly free performance), from one character to the next and from one subject to the other, pulling it all off perfectly and crafting a work whose great atmospheric charm is composed of individual cards which, when laid on the table, come to form a straight flush. Cineuropa: Where did the idea for I Comete come from? Pascal Tagnati: First, from a desire to continue working in Corsica and to talk about things I know about and which affect me, given that I live there. I wanted to play around with local daily life, to poke it about, to make it political in places, and to challenge it, in certain respects. Our villages in the summertime are the perfect places to observe and to try to understand the micro-society that is modern-day Corsican society. Itâs a bit like a laboratory. In winter, these villages are empty but then in the summer, everyone comes back, from the towns, from the continent, from abroad, and itâs as if they never left. There are moments of exchange, and from a distance you can see the ties that bind people together, why some are close and others not. Itâs a fascinating microcosm concentrated over a few months, and it makes for brilliant subject-matter. ....
