Uncertain future for planned South Bradford 'enterprise zone'

THE future of a planned multi million pound “enterprise zone” in the South of Bradford looks uncertain, with a funding deadline soon to pass.
In 2016 West Yorkshire Combined Authority had been granted a £20 million pot of cash from the Government’s Local Growth Fund to help set up a series of zones on vacant sites near the M62 corridor.
This would include two in Bradford, at Parry Lane and Staithgate Lane.
Work is soon to begin on the Parry Lane scheme, but there has been little progress on a third site – off Staithgate Lane.
And with a requirement that the £20m had to be spent before the end of March 2021, it now seems likely that a new funding stream will be needed if the development is to go ahead. ....

Work to transform one of most 'difficult to develop' sites in Bradford moves forward

COUNCILLORS have agreed funding to help transform one of the most difficult to develop sites in Bradford into a new Enterprise Zone.
The Bradford Council owned site off Parry Lane, the former HQ of Yorkshire Energy, has stood vacant for more than 15 years.
It is thought that the high costs of developing the brownfield site have put off any developers from taking on the land.
Recently the site, between Sticker Lane and Bowling Back Lane, was identified as one of several areas in West Yorkshire that would be earmarked as Enterprise Zones.
West Yorkshire Combined Authority, made up of five local councils, would provide funding to help prepare the sites for future development - making them much more attractive to businesses. ....

A FAILED businessman become the sixth and final member of an organised crime ring operating in Bradford to be put behind bars this month.
Richard Beech was jailed for five years for laundering £5 million of drugs money for the gang.
He made frequent trips between his home in Manchester and West Yorkshire to collect and deliver large amounts of cash concealed in hidden compartments under the seats of his specially modified Range Rover.
He was labelled the “cash converter and banker” for the organisation led by Rashid Ashraf (also known as Mohammed Rashid) who was jailed for 18 years. ....

THREE men were jailed for their roles in a major organised crime ring operating in the Bradford area.
Father of three Yaser Nazir was imprisoned for five years and three months after the police seized £1.214 million of cocaine and heroin when they busted the operation.
Nazir, 38, of Lindley Road, Little Horton, Bradford, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply cocaine.
Prosecutor Alasdair Campbell said he was involved with the gang on March 5 and 19 this year. ....

Woman armed herself with samurai sword to confront masked burglars

She and her husband had bought the samurai sword as an ornament.
But Miriam Carrington told yesterday how she ended up using it as a razor-sharp weapon when masked burglars raided her home.
The 56-year-old, who knew how to hold the 3ft sword only from watching the film Kill Bill, wielded it to such effect that one of the burglars almost bled to death after he grabbed the blade, which sliced into his hands.
A judge backed her actions, saying it was self-defence.
Mrs Carrington and her husband Martin, 52, bought the weapon for £80 on the internet ten years ago because they are interested in Japanese culture. ....
