Worse COVID Illness, Stronger Immunity After?

Worse COVID Illness, Stronger Immunity After?
By Robert Preidt
HealthDay Reporter
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 27, 2021 (HealthDay News) People who ve recovered from severe COVID-19 may have stronger long-term immune protection from reinfection than those with milder illness, researchers report.
They examined blood samples from 39 COVID-19 patients and 10 people who hadn t been exposed to the virus (their blood samples were given pre-pandemic). In all, they analyzed the expression of individual genes of more than 80,000 CD8+ T-cells.
CD8+ T-cells are immune cells that destroy virus-infected host cells, and memory CD8+ T-cells protect the body from reinfection by many types of viruses.
Of the COVID-19 patients, 17 had milder illness and weren t hospitalized, 13 had been hospitalized, and nine ended up in intensive care. The researchers were surprised to find that patients with milder COVID-19 had weaker CD8+ T-cell responses. ....

Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have found that people with severe Covid-19 are left with more of the immune system s protective memory T cells needed for fighting reinfection with the novel coronavirus.
The study, published in the journal Science Immunology, assessed the expression of individual genes of a subset of T cells isolated from both Covid-19 patients and non-exposed donors.
‘Memory’ T cells
Analysing more than 80,000 CD8+ T cells, the scientists, including those from La Jolla Institute of Immunology (LJI) in the US, believe the study is the first to describe these cells that fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus in high resolution detail. ....

LA JOLLA, CA A big question on people s minds these days: how long does immunity to SARS-CoV-2 last following infection?
Now a research team from La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI), The University of Liverpool and the University of Southampton has uncovered an interesting clue. Their new study suggests that people with severe COVID-19 cases may be left with more of the protective memory T cells needed to fight reinfection.
The data from this study suggest people with severe COVID-19 cases may have stronger long-term immunity, says study co-leader LJI Professor Pandurangan Vijayanand, M.D., Ph.D. ....

Immune Cell Gene Expression Revealed in 3D Maps

To understand how genes affect human health, researchers need to go beyond variants in the DNA sequence, and dive into the switches, or enhancers, that control when and where a gene is expressed in the body. Now, researchers at La Jolla Institute for Immunology have created 3D maps of how enhancer sequences and genes interact in several types of immune cells. This work advances the understanding of individual risk for diseases from asthma to cancer and even COVID-19. ....

Novel 3D maps show how genes interact in several types of immune cells

Novel 3D maps show how genes interact in several types of immune cells
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how our small genetic differences can have a tremendous effect on how our bodies respond to disease.
The difference is within us. We can get infected by the same bacteria or viruses, but the ways our diseases progress can be very different.
Vivek Chandra, Ph.D, Instructor at La Jolla Institute for Immunology
Genetic variations are important, but there s more to the puzzle. To truly understand how genes affect health, researchers need to track down the switches (also called enhancers ) that control when and where a gene is expressed in the body. ....
