Just like me. would do well out here and there s a guy going to school to be a, get his master s degree. i mean, doctor s degree. his name is leroy washington. guys like that just just rotting away in there. you know? it just and then i can name on and on, you know i m saying you ve got people like horace peterson, you know, he didn t kill anyone. but you get him in prison, he d been in prison for 52 years. you seem to have kept some of your spirit. i don t know you, we met today but the cycle of over-incarceration especially for very young, people can really change the whole trajectory of their lives. so before i bring in the filmmakers, a bit of a personal question however you want to answer it, how did you stay true to yourself and keep your hope or whatever, kept you going to be the person you are here to be able to talk to us ....

To college, i got to go to law school, but it didn t reflect real transformation in the society. we have had transformation over the last 40, 50 years. you see things that you wouldn t have imagined seeing. we even had an african american president in 2008, so we have made a lot of progress, but the real challenge of reckoning with our history, reckoning with our past, learning from that past so that we actually eliminate bigotry and bias and discrimination, we re really in the early stages of that process. we overcame enslavement, we overcame terrorised lynching and violence, we ve overcome to a certain extent legalised racial segregation and hierarchy. we re still dealing with over incarceration. but this problem of genuinely reckoning with our history, honestly understanding how we have to correct and repair that damage, we re just beginning to deal with that. well, i do want to talk at length about the coming to terms with history and truth telling, not least ....
