PM Hamdok announces new gvt members in a press conference in Khartoum yesterday (SUNA)
Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok announced the members of the transitional government s new cabinet in a press conference in Khartoum yesterday evening. The new cabinet brings in a total of 25 ministers, many of whom are part of the rebel parties that signed the Juba Peace Agreement.
Hamdok stated that the formation was achieved through a political consensus to avoid a governmental ‘collapse’. 
The formation of a new government provides more agency to the rebel parties that signed the Juba Peace Agreement. The Forces for Freedom and Chance (FFC) presented their list for 17 ministerial positions earlier this month. Last month, there were still disagreements among the members of the FFC regarding the nomination of new ministers. ....

Four COVID-19 cases confirmed in eastern Sudan camp for Ethiopian refugees

Four COVID-19 cases were confirmed and are in isolation in the Um Rakouba refugee camp in eastern Sudan’s El Gedaref on Tuesday. 63 close contacts have been identified and quarantined, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The international Mercy Corps organisation which is running a health clinic in the Um Rakuba camp, called for swift and urgent additional measures “to prevent further transmission and avoid another humanitarian disaster”. 
El Gedaref Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Sudanese government s Commissioner for Refugees (COR) are leading the response with support from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and its partners. ....

Covid-19’s second wave hits Sudan harder and faster

Sudan’s healthcare system was already in crisis before Covid-19. Now the country’s second wave is pushing it further past its limits

While people celebrated the new year in Khartoum, the state’s ministry of health recorded 134 new cases of Covid-19 and seven deaths, according to its director, Mahjoub Taj el-Sir. The state’s increasing infection rate is a worrying trend, the director says, because Khartoum state like the rest of Sudan is still woefully ill-prepared to contend with the second wave of the virus.
The second wave of the coronavirus has hit Sudan twice as fast, with about the same number of cases and deaths reported in almost half the time of the first wave, according to federal ministry of health data. During the first two weeks of October, the average daily number of cases reported was fewer than 10. This increased to more than 100 cases every day by mid-Nov ....
