January 17 - 2021 UM RAKOUBA / KHARTOUM The first Ethiopians fleeing the war in Tigray arrive in El Gedaref (Social media) Four COVID-19 cases were confirmed and are in isolation in the Um Rakouba refugee camp in eastern Sudan’s El Gedaref on Tuesday. 63 close contacts have been identified and quarantined, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The international Mercy Corps organisation which is running a health clinic in the Um Rakuba camp, called for swift and urgent additional measures “to prevent further transmission and avoid another humanitarian disaster”. El Gedaref Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Sudanese government s Commissioner for Refugees (COR) are leading the response with support from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and its partners. ....
January 14 - 2021 KHARTOUM Medics warn for the consequences of the second COVID-19 wave in November (Social Media) In a press conference with Sudan News Agency (SUNA) yesterday, Dr Bandar Nouri, a member of the Socialist Doctors Association (SDA), talked about the rise in COVID-19 infections, high death rates, regional disparities, and concerns about the lack of health care facilities and protection for medical staff. In the press conference, Dr Nouri confirmed that the total number of recorded COVID-19 related deaths was 1576 on January 6. He explains that 77 per cent of these deaths occurred inside isolation centres, which indicates an absence of ‘effective intervention’ and a lack of access to patients. ....
January 12 - 2021 KHARTOUM Minister of Health in Khartoum State, Dr Mahjoub Menoufeli, presents the periodic report at the Corona Emergency Centre in Khartoum on January 10, 2021 (Social Media) The Ministries of Health in Khartoum State, El Gezira, and River Nile State have published their reports on the rise of COVID-19 infections in their respective states. The Khartoum State Ministry of Health has recorded 110 new cases of COVID-19 and nine deaths on Friday and Saturday. This brings the state’s cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths to 778 and the number of confirmed cases to 18,585. The director of the ministry, Mahjoub Menoufeli, presented the periodic report at the Corona Emergency Centre on Sunday. He indicated that the prevalence rate is now 20.9 per 10,000 residents. ....
December 28 - 2020 KHARTOUM Cartoon by Omar Dafallah (RD) The Khartoum Ministry of Health reported yesterday “a remarkable increase” in the number of COVID-19 infections in the state. 241 new cases were registered on Friday. Nine patients died, and five recovered. The total number of coronavirus cases in Khartoum since the first patient was registered in March, reached 17,249 , Mahjoub Menoufeli, Director of the Ministry, stated. 17 Rapid Response Teams are visiting people with symptoms at their homes in the Sudanese capital. During the past 24 hours the teams visited 40 houses, and took samples of 93 suspected cases, Menoufeli said. The COVID-19 treatment centres in Khartoum received 23 confirmed cases. ....
