About Endlessness opens with the visual of a couple (Jan-Eje Ferling and Tatiana Delaunay) floating through gray, cloudy skies.
Magnolia Pictures
Milan Radisics’ short cinema essay “The Art Of Pollution” takes viewers on an aerial tour of lands colored in shades of blue-green, red, and brown (among other colors) that will prove striking to the eye.  However, the colorful sights seen here will not enhance viewers’ appreciation of natural beauty.  For the vivid colors seen on screen are the products of such human activities as tailing ponds, mining, and the residues of human-created chemical compounds.  Rather than being signifiers of the proverbial circle of life, these lands of supersaturated colors feel like har ....

Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma
Legendary investigative journalist I.F. Stone famously said “All governments lie.”  Nanfu Wang’s flawed but still worthwhile documentary “In The Same Breath” shows why Stone’s pronouncement is unfortunately still true.  Her new film assesses the history of the Chinese and American governments’ early responses to the Coronavirus outbreak.  In different ways, both governments’ public lies and coverups contributed to the COVID death toll in both countries.
Nobody is credibly denying the Coronavirus originated in China.  But what is being disputed is the use of that information as license to engage in “socially acceptable” public racism against the Chinese in America.  The Orange Skull regularly whipped his cultists into racist frenzy by peddling that attitude.  It’s one of the flaws of Wang’s film that this point isn’t even mentioned ....

"ASMR For White Liberals" and Other Reviews From Slamdance 2021

“ASMR For White Liberals” and Other Reviews From Slamdance 2021
Slamdance Film Review: The Sleeping Negro
John Connor Hammond’s short “ASMR For White Liberals” hilariously razzes white liberals who mistake personal ego-stroking for allyship.  ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) uses relaxing sights and sounds to create in the recipient a sedative sensation from head to toe.  Using a black whisperer, Hammond brings up irritating white liberal behavior towards blacks in a totally non-confrontational way.  The result makes the white liberal behavior described on screen deservedly seem as ludicrously grotesque as that of your garden variety racist.
Yes, it’s nice that white liberals don’t use the n-word as easily as they breathe.   But wanting to feel the hair of a black person you’re not in any sort of intimate relation with raises questions about the liberal’s mental health.  Nor does a white liberal’s ....

Jack Kirby's son slams rioters' Captain America shirts – The Forward

Neal Kirby, the son of Captain America co-creator Jack Kirby condemned the Capitol insurrectionists for wielding symbols of his father’s iconic hero in support of President Trump, a man he says holds vastly different values.
“While watching the horrific videos of the storming of the Capitol, I thought I noticed someone in a Trump/Capt. America t-shirt!” Kirby wrote in a statement obtained by CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I was appalled and mortified. These images are disgusting and disgraceful. Captain America is the absolute antithesis of Donald Trump.”
As Kirby wrote in his rebuke, Captain America was the brainchild of his dad and Joe Simon, “two Jewish guys from New York who hated Nazis and hated bullies.” Cap, whose real name is Steve Rogers, debuted in 1941 dealing a haymaker to Hitler. He has since served as a selfless symbol of American probity and a champion of the underdog. Kirby contends that Trump is something else entirely. ....
