For 70 years the identity of the Somerton man has been a mystery. His body is now being exhumed in search for answers

The remains of the so-called Somerton man are being exhumed at an Adelaide cemetery in a bid to solve the more than 70-year mystery over his death and his identity.
On 1 December, 1948, the man s body was found on Somerton Beach with the circumstances of his death remaining an open police investigation.
The case is in the hands of the Major Crime Investigation Branch and detectives were on hand as his body was being exhumed at West Terrace Cemetery on Wednesday morning.
Following recovery of the remains, Forensic Science SA will attempt to recover a DNA profile from the man, Detective Superintendent Des Bray said. ....

Body of Somerton Man exhumed, South Australia
On December 1, 1948, the body of a man was found on Somerton Beach. The man has never been identified and as such the investigation into his identity and the circumstances of this death remain an open inquiry.
Following approval by the Attorney-General Vickie Chapman, his body will be exhumed this morning (Wednesday, 19 May).
The case is in the hands of the SA Police’s Major Crime Investigation Branch, who have continued to review and investigate the matter.
Detective Superintendent Des Bray said the exhuming of the man’s body is yet another course of action in our ongoing active investigations. ....
