Rain, hail and snow in 1 day: Minnesotans done with winter

When working on a story about Minnesota's seemingly endless flurry of flakes, it made sense to talk to people within view of one of the most well-known piles of snow in the state.

Women's Day: Austin restaurants owned and operated by women

Austin 360 March has once again served as an annual opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women to American culture and history.  In recognition of the tireless effort of women in the Central Texas hospitality industry, below is a list of local restaurants owned and/or operated primarily by women. Of course, ownership, partnerships and management teams are complicated, and the list doesn’t cover a host of husband-and-wife teams (Asia Market Eatery, Asti, Baguette et Chocolate, Dee Dee, Franklin Barbecue, Gourmands, Justine’s, Kome, Lenoir, Pieous, Poke-Poke, P. Terry s and Vince Young Steakhouse), family-owned restaurants (El Meson, Tamale House East) and the many trailers (Kreyol Korner, Tacos Guerrero, La Flor, Talad Thai and Lao Street Food) run by women. If we’re missing one of your favorites, please email me at modam@statesman.com.

LGBTQ people face higher covid-19 risks. But no one knows the true toll on the community. Samantha Schmidt © Family photo/Family photo Michael Campbell, a 63-year-old D.C. resident, died in November of complications of covid-19. It was mid-November when Gerard Tyler received the text message from his longtime friend, the music-loving former neighbor who would go to nightclubs with him almost every weekend in the early ’90s. “Hey.been in the hospital since Thursday,” his friend, Michael Campbell, 63, texted him. “I have coronavirus pray for me.” Tyler, a 67-year-old D.C. resident, asked whether there was anything he could do. “You’re in my prayers,” he said. The next day, Tyler texted him again, asking how he was feeling. He got no answer.

LGBTQ people face higher covid-19 risks, CDC report says. But no one knows the true toll on the community.

Since the start of the pandemic, LGBTQ advocates in D.C. and nationally have urged health officials to collect covid-19 data about sexual orientation and gender identity. But little progress has been made in releasing this data publicly.
