Smithville Chamber of Commerce doles out awards at 98th annual banquet

The Smithville Area Chamber of Commerce held its 98th annual Chamber Awards Banquet on May 15. Though we had planned to hold our banquet outside in front of the new building, Mother Nature had other plans and we quickly moved from our outdoor set up to indoors at the Recreation Center in just over one hour. Many thanks to Smithville Recreation Center Director Ashley Garrison for accommodating our last-minute change of venue! Once set up and ready to go, we kicked off with live music by the Musikatz, a local four-piece jazz band. Dinner was served by Catering by Chabot, a delicious combination of steak kabobs and chicken cordon bleu, appetizers by Olde World Bakery and dessert by Courtney’s Cakes.  Many thanks to Brown Distributing for the beverage donation. Many thanks also to Doug’s Plumbing, our banquet title sponsor. The live auction, with Stuart Burns as auctioneer, was made possible by donations from LCRA, Bruce and Sallie Blalock, Mayor Joanna and Mike Morgan, Jeannie ....

The news of the reopening of businesses in Texas to 100% will mean our local businesses will be working harder than ever, especially in this busy spring season.  With 34 new businesses having opened their doors since Jan. 1, 2020, Smithville is welcoming new businesses as well as seeing existing businesses expand. On the other side of the positive news, we have many businesses that have struggled to remain open and maintain their staff members during the pandemic. Remember to shop Smithville first. So much of what we all need in our day to day lives can be purchased right here in our own small town. I remind everyone that talks about the way Smithville “used” to be th ....

The Smithville Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors held its annual retreat “virtually” this year on Saturday. The board discussed the 2020 year and all of the many projects and programs the chamber completed or launched. From dozens of online podcasts in the new Chamber Chatter series, online training, virtual luncheons, the annual candidate forum and more, the chamber worked hard to continue to serve its members and the community. The chamber worked hard to bring a small business mini-grant program to Smithville businesses impacted by the pandemic, started a marketing and music grant program and continued its façade grant program. The chamber launched a website shopinsmithville.com re-designed its website at www.smithvilletx.org and launched Smithville’s first-ever community magazine “SMITHVILLE 78957.” The chamber also created a virtual online page for Bastrop County MLK Day with other county and city leaders, created its online ECO/PHOTO FEST event and m ....
