CSPAN2 Tonight From Washington December 14, 2012

My inspiration was the idea that i wanted to explain how totalitarianism happens. We do know the story of the cold war. We know that the documents we have seen the archives and described relationships between roosevelt, stalin and truman and we know the main events from our point of view. What i wanted to do was show from a different angle, from the ground up, what did it feel like to be one of the people who were subjected to this system and how did people make choices in that system and how did they react . Its interesting that one of the things that has happened since 1989 is the regional used to call at Eastern Europe has become very differentiated. These countries no longer have much in common with one another except the common memory of communist occupation. Russian president Vladimir Putin this week gave his first eight of the nation speech since being reelected. His n ....

Good afternoon. Congratulations it is a big event to publish a book it is a big deal so congratulations. I really love to read this said i thought we would talk about what drew you to the project about Oliver Wendell holmes and the implication for First Amendment issues today then we will throw out there but i was hoping to begin you could read one page from the book, page member for this is actually not thomass writings but it helps to capture very well what he was struggling with what is so great about this book. This is from holmes dissenting opinion in the 1919 case abrams vs. United states. The first case that holmes defends the importance of free speech and that is a turning point in our history of the First Amendment. Incredibly powerful dissent especially the last paragraph that he tries to explain in a philoso ....

I think we could have won without patent. I think we could have one without lemonade i dont think lemay. The greeks wouldve even thought or without dallas stars, the emperor would not have recovered much of the western part of the byzantineroman empire. I dont think there was a Union General allies who couldve taken atlanta at the cost that we took it, very small cost compared to was going on in virginia i dont know anybody who couldve done what Matthew Ridgeway and i wish i couldve said they were american generals, not very many couldve done what David Petraeus did. I was trying to look at unique individual struck history chronologically to try to remind us that even the therapeutic, sociological and of hightech that the human qualities remain constant across time and space. Few readers and few historians would dispute ....

United on eight justices who did endorse the disclosure current requirements. Only Justice Thomas dissented in that decision. I know it doesnt look very hopeful i think that congress is the way theyre on a deeing regulation trend until the Supreme Court. What can change normal terms of obama or anyone else couldnt even get through nominations for regular courts though Supreme Court. The president ial elections do matter. Hi, im jim. My question deals with roberts vote on the health care issue. Do you think he was motivated by the fear that the court began to look like a political entity rather than a jurisprudence entity . Youre welcome to speak to this too. Its probably one of the most common questions we get, isnt it . Yeah. Do i think so . No. I take him at the word. I take him as sincerely trying to grapple with the is ....

Investigative agencies. With a raid into was a situation that was really upside down. Normally they would try to find evidence and then find out what is going on and they found nothing. They couldnt find any crimes. So they did file a report saying that we dont have anything on these guys and they had seen most of them as being like dirt farmers. Sort of an agricultural bounty of afghanistan. [inaudible question] is rhythmic that all of these legal issues arise in context with the situations for all of us. And its great that we can learn about our systems of justice from this. Particularly for the folks that are being prosecuted. Given that the administration has made clear that even if they are found innocent, they have shaped the case. And if you do conclude that this is theater for the entertainment of americans are we finding that the real aim for one of the things coming out of it is there is a use of these to control how this is told by the media and exemplified by how tightly th ....
