of peoples lies. is not just true in foreign politics. the same is true with respect to the economy. this week we saw that balko over 12,000 points. if you're walking down wall street, the economy looks great but if you go to decatur illinois or galesburg illinois or peoria, illinois, the economy looks very different to the reason is because the top 1% have seen their incomes rise by 500% over the last decade and the average working stiff is seen their wages flat line. the top 1% is much more likely to participate politically than the other 99%. so we've had these distortions in terms of how decisions are made in washington. i don't have a magic solution to it the part of the reason i wrote this book was to suggest that there has to be ways for us to read engage the citizenry around the project of america, both domestically and internationally. >> of the bestsellers in 2006 were culture warrior and bob woodward's statement in a. watch all of the programs that have appeared on booktv over the past 15 years online at booktv.org. >> booktv's online book club selection for october is representative john lewis is walking with the wind, a memoir of the movement. >> as a young child, i didn't like it. as my mother and my father and my grandparents, my great grandparents, why segregation? white racial discrimination? and they would say that's the way it is. don't get in trouble, don't get in the way. but in 1965 when i was in the 10th grade, 15 years old, i heard of rosa parks. i heard the voice of martin luther king, jr. on the radio, and the words of dr. king inspired me to find a way to get in the way. in 1956 with my brothers and sisters in some of my first cousins we went down to the public library in a little town of troy, alabama, trying to get a library card. trying to check some books out. and we were told by the library and that libraries were for whites only and not for collar collards. but on july 5, 1998, i went back to the public library in troy, alabama, for a book signing of my book, walking with the wind and hundreds of black blacks and whites us and showed up and they gave me a library card.
