Good morning and welcome to face nation. I am john dickerson, reporting from cleveland. Yesterday donald trump made it official, naming mike pence as his running mate. Following that announcement the two sat down with lesley stahl for an interview that will air tonight on 60 minutes. Here is a preview. I dont know if you can remember the last time we have seen a world this much in chaos. You even said it is spinning apart. Are you both are you ready for this world that we are facing today . Well, we are both ready, i have no doubt. You need toughness, we need strength, obama is weak. Hillary is weak, and part of it is that, a big part of it, we need law and order, we need strong borders, we have people coming to our country who cant be vetted properly. They dont have paperwork, they dont have anything. We dont even know where they come from. The larger issue here is declining American Power in the world. A truly, i truly do believe history teaches weakness arouses evil and whether it b
Are dead. Flee more a three more are wounded. Officers are stationed outside area hospitals where their wounded colleagues are being treated. Officials telling us in a briefing a short time ago that one suspect on scene is dead. Officers sent in a robot to make sure there were no explosives. Not that they have word there were explosives, but they just dont know what theyre dealing with here. They clearly believe theyre dealing with a conspiracy. They call the scene contained but active. Meaning theyre still working it, but the suspect who is there is deceased. And were now getting dramatic audio of police calling in the shooting. Listen. Shots fired officers down got a city officer down shots fired shots fired thats the audiofrom scene. The white house we leasing a brief statement on the attack essentially saying president obama has been briefed and will be updated throughout the day as more details come in. The white house also offering Baton Rouge Police any assistance they might nee
[ gunfire ] our polo sandoval, you just returned from baton rouge. There have been nights and nights of protest after the policeinvolved shooting and killing of alton sterling. You were there covering that. This also comes after the killing of Philando Castile and after the ambush and attack of 12 Police Officers in dallas. Five were killed, seven injured there. Talk to me about the state of the community in baton rouge right now as this happens. Well, you take all of those incidents and it equals to a very tense community and that is what we saw firsthand as we were there in baton rouge, louisiana. There was a large demonstration that took place where some officers were seriously injured but eventually were able to recover. Yes, there were arrests made and, yes, we saw an increase of Police Presence. Not because of the violence that broke out during the demonstrations but also because there were two threats that investigators were following up on. At the same time, were seeing several
You know. I know exactly what youve been reporting on cnn at this time. The guys that we have on the ground in baton rouge are obviously very busy, so weve not been able to make contact with them other than through text message. Theyre responding to the area, to the families. I agree with the assistant director, this is not a normal day in the life of a Police Officer. Law enforcements under attack in this country. Ive been ringing that bell since the shootings in new york, assassination type assaults on police are up. Although the total number of officers killed are down. We attribute that to much Better Emergency Medical Services than in the 80s and 90s. The country needs to wake up. Were in a point now where the government needs to put a full court press on, assilaw enforce in what weve been telling them for years, the disconnect in these communities. When i say day in the life of a Police Officer, i mean we are constantly reminded that when Police Officers leave their home in the m
Our arms around everything. Its just been one thing after another. Were going to focus on what is happening there right now. Because there are a variety of reports that we have to confirm. Information and images are scattered so well bring you it as we get it. Let me get on the phone with Law Enforcement analyst harry haupe. We have been here all too often, talking nine days ago about the ambush in dallas. Now there is a serious shooting in baton rouge. Theres sporadic reports of a shootout between a suspect and the police, and we know there are multiple officers down, we dont know their condition. When you hear this news once again, what is your initial reaction, knowing how other officers all across the country when they hear this news right now . I tell you, its heart breaking to see Police Officers having to go through this again in another city. The fact is that there is a war on the police. And it has started and the fact is that we have a narrative out there that is that helps p
