Us that the war has ended. And they can put out the picture of the last soldier. They say. But we all know it isn t over. Okay. Two reasons. Now, what we do know that is true is that america has lost the last clear chance to cut a different deal. Or to maintain a force in afghanistan until everyone is out or to reclaim the bagram air base to secure exits and to keep an eye on one of the most if not the most fertile terror spots in the world. So you can say this has ended, but it certainly is not over. Two reasons. First, the immediate. As many as 200 americans are still there, and look, i have never trusted the numbers, not because i m cynical. I m just being skeptical from a practical perspective. I don t know how they know how many people there are on the ground. And they have said themselves, even at the white house level, that they can t be sure. So they say 200. 100, 200. We have been keeping an eye on a number of alerts of damage from the storm, and power is the primary issue, and entergy is the power company, and they are out of power and it s causing an imbalance in transmission. This is a compounded problem because they need that for a lot of things, including pumping water away from the levees. Let me be clear, we have no reports of damage to levees. There s reports of flash flooding and an emergency that has been issued by the weather service, but that s not pursuant to damage of the levees. We will keep an eye on that and continue to update you as the evening goes on. We have plenty of correspondents out in the field, and ali velshi is in new orleans, and janessa web, we ll start with you. What can you tell us? we are dealing with a destructive and deadly storm system and it s dark across southeast louisiana, and we saw the storm make landfall eight hours ago and it s downgraded to a cat 3. Can you see that we re dealing with severe weather tonig

With ali velshi weathering the storm. Tonight, hurricane ida is a category 2 storm, but a powerful one at that. Let s begin with ali in new orleans, where the power has been out for some time, and it looks like it s going to be out for a while. Reporter: yeah, joshua, we re in the 11th hour since landfall of this storm, and it s still whipping up. You can see this water behind me in new orleans, which wasn t sort of inside of the center of this hurricane to start with. So it s a very, very powerful storm, and it s mostly hitting new orleans on the backside of this thing. We saw it pop up in wind about 2, 2 1/2 hours ago, to pretty intense. It started to let off for a little while, and we re still getting big gusts and bands. What ended up happening about a couple of hours ago is we lost power. We lost it in the local area here downtown. I thought it might have been central to this block or building. We learned there was a much bigger problem. It was what they call a catastrophic proble

We re so grateful to have you with us on this sunday. It is august 29. Thank you for keeping us company here. Hi, phil. Hey, christi. Alrighty. So let s talk about hurricane hunters right now. They are doing hourly updates at this point as hurricane ida zeros in on communities on the gulf coast. Ida is already a powerful category 4 storm and it s still gaining strength. Now, it will make landfall today bringing as much as 20 inches of rain to some areas with the potential for destructive storm surge and strong winds. Now, yesterday bumper tobumpe traffic stretched for miles as people left their homes for safety. Now, a strike today would fall exactly 16 years after hurrican katrina ripped through the arena. It s a coincidence not lost on many who decided to leave their homes. Katrina, hey, i had to stand in the water and slept on a bridge for two days. Fema trucks and generators are in the area as well. Take a look there. The national guard has also been deployed. Earlier this morning
