Concern over antisocial behaviour at historic Old Abbey


There are serious concerns that one of Drogheda s most historical areas is being ravaged by vandalism, neglect and antisocial behaviour.
The Old Abbey Lane, which houses the ruins of The Abbey of St Mary d Urso, is the site of frequent antisocial behaviour, illegal drinking and skateboarding, as well as extensive damage having been done to the ancient walls from the former monastery.
Cllr Joanna Byrne raised her concerns at the lack of action to protect this site as the recent council meeting, calling for signage to strengthen the job of the local gardai in tacking the issue.
The situation is getting worse, with youths gathering every weekend there now, drinking and socialising, as well as skateboarding, as they say they are being pushed from the faciltity they have, said Cllr Byrne. Since July, I have been calling for anti-drinking signage, which the gardai say is necessary before they can move people on there. ....
