The beloved retired school bus driver was feted with a parade, including school buses, outside her home to celebrate her 100th birthday on Feb. 21.
She was born Feb. 5, 1921, and passed peacefully at home in Ojai just 16 days after her surprise parade.

Re: Nicholas Oatway’s Feb. 19 Op-Ed, “Open hearts to make Chaparral property ‘alive’”:
I found Mr. Oatway s Op-Ed calling for open hearts to make Chaparral property alive to be inspiring and visionary. The Ojai Unified School District trustees should give serious consideration to Mr. Oatway s proposal, as I stated in an email to Shelley Griffen, trustee of my district.
I encourage other residents interested in the redevelopment of the Chaparral property to make similar requests. Local architect Oatway s vision seems much more compatible with the “Ojai way” than the site plan proposed by an outside firm.
Ojai Unified School District is offering free summer camps for elementary, middle and high school students July 6-30.
OUSD is also seeking community members to participate in its summer school program from July 6-30 as teachers, aides and support staff. Most classes will be held Monday through Thursday.
There will be in-person, hybrid and online options. Teachers will be paid $50 an hour; the amount support staff will be paid will depend on the position, according to a school district Facebook post.
