Last year, 245 people ended their lives using Oregon s Death With Dignity Act. Bruce Yelle wasn t one of them.

For years, the retired construction worker from Florence had worked to expand the law, which allows terminally ill people to request medication to end their life.
Bruce Yelle fell in love with Florence, Oregon, where he spent the last few years of his life.

When Yelle was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last summer, he asked for and received his own set of the deadly pills. But in the end, Yelle decided not to take them. His wife, Kathy Yelle, said he never explained why he made that choice. ....

Businesses touted as solution to distributing COVID-19 vaccines.
On May 15 Oregon’s COVID-19 vaccination strategy was dictated by Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration’s vaccine plan. Although the plan distributed vaccines to states quickly, it lacked state-level guidelines and distributed fewer doses than promised.
State officials and health care providers were put in a precarious position of having to decide how to distribute a limited amount of vaccines. Some health systems prioritized vaccinating their own employees before the most vulnerable people in the community.
“I wish there were more to Operation Warp Speed than ‘get the vaccine to the states,’” says Joe Ness, chief operating officer at Oregon Health and Science University. “A lot of granular details of the vaccine rollout were not considered.” ....

According to Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), alteration of genes in a human embryo has been used for the first time in the United States. The research led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov, head of OHSU s Center for Embryonic Cell and Gene Therapy has said the whole process involves a technology known as CRISPR that has opened up a new gate in genetic medicine because of its ability to modify genes swiftly and efficiently. ....
