Erica Werner12:38, Jul 12 2021 Several dozen heat enthusiasts crowded around a large digital thermometer outside the Furnace Creek Visitor Centre in Death Valley, the US, on Saturday afternoon (local time), convinced they had just witnessed a new world record of heat. The reading had just hit 57.2 degrees Celsius – the highest temperature the thermometer had ever recorded – though a separate and more accurate National Weather Service sensor was still stuck at a mere 53.9C, short of a record. “The hottest day in the recorded history of mankind,” marvelled Steve Forsell, 71, of Santa Barbara, who said he had been monitoring forecasts for years hoping to be present for this moment. ....

(KPLC) - Officials with the Lake Charles Police Department have released the name of the person found dead following an incident at a motel on Lakeshore Drive Wednesday. Lt. Jeff Keenum said in a news release that the deceased is Kyner Gene Rollins, 44, from California. Lake Charles police said Wednesday that they responded to shots fired from a room at the Oasis Inn and Suites around 5:16 a.m. Wednesday. Because the shots were fired toward I-10, the interstate was shut down for about four hours. ....
Barricade Standoff Situation Is Over at Oasis Inn & Suites The barricade standoff situation is finally over next door at the Oasis Inn & Suites Motel at 1000 N. Lakeshore Drive. We still don t know much about why or how the standoff occurred. The I-10 interstate was completely shutdown from the I-10 and 210 splits on each end of the city. Both directions were closed to all traffic and those stuck on the interstate in-between were being detoured down the wrong way of the Lakeshore Drive one-way feeder road. I ended up having to walk to work because all traffic was blocked off from traveling under the I-10 overpass at the Lakeshore Drive intersection next to the freeway. I had to park my van near the cemetery and walk the rest of the way. When I got to work, the entire feeder was full of LCPD and SWAT vehicles. There were firetrucks, ambulances, and EMTs on both side of the interstate, so it was really crazy over here. ....
