US heatwave: Excitement in Death Valley as temperature climbs to world-record high

Several dozen heat enthusiasts crowded around a large digital thermometer outside the Furnace Creek Visitor Centre in Death Valley, the US, on Saturday afternoon (local time), convinced they had just witnessed a new world record of heat.
The reading had just hit 57.2 degrees Celsius – the highest temperature the thermometer had ever recorded – though a separate and more accurate National Weather Service sensor was still stuck at a mere 53.9C, short of a record.
“The hottest day in the recorded history of mankind,” marvelled Steve Forsell, 71, of Santa Barbara, who said he had been monitoring forecasts for years hoping to be present for this moment. ....
