Staff report The Tribune Chronicle and The Vindicator have received 15 awards in this year’s statewide Associated Press Media Editors awards, including a first-place win in the spot news category, the APME announced. More than 50 daily newspapers in Ohio submitted 1,418 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2020. Entries for this newspaper’s division were judged by editors from The Grand Haven Tribune in Michigan. Reporter Ashley Fox won first place in the spot news category for her coverage of the September shooting death of 4-year-old Rowan Sweeney in Struthers. Sports writer Joe Simon won first place as best sports writer, which was judged on multiple entries. Simon also won third place in the best sports columnist category. ....

WARREN The former Warren police officer who falsely said a black man in a hoodie shot at him will spend the next nine months in the state’s Lorain Correctional Institution. Noah Linnen, 24, took full responsibility and expressed remorse for his actions on Jan. 13, 2020, and the days that followed, that had police officers from various departments searching for a person who did not exist. “I had been experiencing a great deal of stress from my personal and professional lives that I clearly could not cope with,” Linnen said. “I thought I could handle everything on my own.
