Long-distance runner Samarasinghe brought laurels to the country

Vijitha Kanda Lekamlage Samarasinghe, who represented Sri Lanka in the marathon at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988, was born in Kuruwita on January 16, 1962 and was educated at Parakaduwa Narada MV.
He had participated in several athletic events under the guidance of his Games Teacher Nihal Fernando.
In 1983, he made his appearance for the first time in the National Marathon and was placed fourth. In 1985, he was placed second and in 1986, he won this event.
Thereafter, he came under the wing of Coach Lakshman de Alwis and went on to participate in several international marathons between 1986 and 1991. His best achievement was 2:16.00s at the SAF Games in 1987, held in Kolkata, India. ....

A jury has found mental services were fundamentally flawed in their handling of a beloved son and brother who killed himself in a hospital ward.
Ashworth had been admitted to hospital and underwent months of treatment after he jumped from the Arndale Shopping Centre car park and survived, an inquest at Rochdale Coroners Court has heard.
The 34-year-old spent eight years battling his ‘plummeting’ mental health - which came on ‘without any signs’ while in his mid-20s, his family said. ....

A global pandemic shutting down most economies and resulting in over half a million deaths, would have been dismissed as science fiction and not even science fiction written by the likes of Arthur Clark or Isaac Asimov. Mourning Mala: Remembering Malathi De Alwis

Mala’s passing has shaken me; cut my finger which bled profusely yesterday, making breakfast, while thinking of her and remembering that she wrote a poem titled: “To a Tamil Friend” after the 1983 riots. 
We were ‘best friends” in school, at Ladies College (LC), for many years. Our (extended) families knew each other and our fathers had been in the same school. Mala was creative, always in the top 3 in class, quiet, sensitive and kind in school, more serious than me. She had a discerning eye and enjoyed nature. During lunch-break we used to swap food – usually sandwiches, cutlets or Chinese rolls, or had ‘bites’ from each other’s. Mala ‘hated’ egg sandwiches! She used to lecture me when an LC Prefect because I did not wear the required “underskirt” with the white uniform and signature red buckle. I thought wearing underskirts was uncool; was more rebellious. We did ....
