mosquitoes are spreading a viral infection called chikungun chikungunya. cases up in 38 states and exclusively in people who travel to the caribbean or central america where the outbreak began. true in new jersey which announced 25 new cases. here s abc s josh haskell. reporter: 25 new jersey residents who returned from traveling in the caribbean have reportedly brought back the m mosqui mosquito-carrying virus chikungunya. boy, is it painful. in african language it means bent over with pain. reporter: the virus is rarely fatal but can be debilitating. symptoms, high fever. headache, muscle, joint pain. the virus is not contagious person to person. local mosquitoes can sting a person who contracted it elsewhere, therefore, acquiring the disease and passing it along to people who have not traveled abroad. randomly sampling the county selecting mosquitoes and submitting those for testing. reporter: mosquitoes in new jersey don t appear to have contracted chikunguny
