The family of Andrew Brown Jr., the 42-year-old Black man killed by North Carolina police in April, filed a federal civil rights and wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday.
The suit demands more than $30 million in damages, according to a copy obtained by Raleigh NBC affiliate WRAL. Members of the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office are named as defendants.
Brown was fatally shot April 21 while inside his car near his home in Elizabeth City. His cause of death was a gunshot to the back of the head, autopsies confirmed. None of the several officers at Brown’s home that morning were charged with crimes. ....

Cuban police patrol Havana streets after protests as president urges communist loyalists to ‘fight’ fed-up demonstrators

Formidable police patrols continued in Havana on Monday following a day of unrest that saw thousands of fed-up Cuban citizens take to the streets of the capitol and other cities across the island over a lack of food, rising prices and an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The uncharacteristically spirited condemnation of the country’s communist government drew support from President Biden Monday, after Cuba’s leader added to tensions by encouraging pro-government loyalists to “fight” the demonstrators.
“The order to fight has been given into the street, revolutionaries!” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said during a televised speech on Monday. ....
