Its a great pleasure to be in your presence, stephen. People in ukraine know who you are, they follow you, and they appreciate what you do. No, im thrilled to be here. It was extraordinary to visit ukraine almost a year ago, and i still think about it almost every day and follow whats going on in the news with puzzlement, hope, sometimes despair, and often bafflement. Across as some kind of creepy tourist who was just kind of feasting on the unusual sight and ticking it off on a weird bucket list. That wasn t my intention, i was invited there, but i m aware that it s a sensitive area, isn t it? oh, but you can see. . . Yeah, yeah. And that s why i went there. Olena zelenska, the first lady, she has, for a few years now, had these special conferences in which she invites other first ladies and, as they call them, first ladies and gentlemen. So the first ladies and gentlemen gather, and discuss things, and use what i suppose you might call the soft power of a presidential or prime ministerial spouse. Really interesting to see the Vice President cast that vote before dawn. Well, certainly she leaves the u. S. Senate and she has to be back in that chair to break the tie. This isnt the first time youll see her breaking ties in an effort to try and pass the president s covid relief package. Look, this was a major moment on the senate floor, and they started this entire process yesterday at 2 30 in the afternoon. Then they had 15 hours of what is known up here as a voterama. Its really an effort by the Minority Party to try to put the majority in tough spots by having to take very hard votes they can then later use on the campaign trail. And that works both ways. Both parties using this process to their advantage. But heres why it all matters. This unlocks joe bidens ability to pass a covid relief bill with just democratic votes. If we have a sea of people, if we shut down the streets, if we shut down everything, if we flood the capitol building, flood all of the government buildings, go inside. These are public buildings. We own them. We own these buildings. Do you understand that . We own the buildings and we pay the people who work in the buildings. Flood the capitol, flood the government buildings, we own the buildings. Sounds now so sinister, right . No
