Nepal chokes on smoke and ash as drought-worsened wildfires rage

DANG, Nepal (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - In the eight years that Basudev Pokharel has worked as a forest guard, he has rarely seen a fire as huge as the one that raged through his village in western Nepal in March.
Hundreds of such fires have been spreading across the country since November, in the worst wildfire season Nepal has seen in a decade.
The night the blaze reached Pokharel’s village of Sungure, in Dang district, a neighbour woke him to warn him.
“We tried to control the fire, but it spread so rapidly that we were helpless,” the 55-year-old recalled. ....

Climate-smart farming for western Nepal villages eases migration pressure

PYUTHAN, Nepal (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Ram Bahadur Rayamajhi worked in a furniture shop in India for nearly 15 years but returned to his home village in western Nepal’s Pyuthan district several years ago, after suffering from a nerve problem.
With his son unable to find a good job, Rayamajhi had to provide for his household of eight people and took up farming as his main profession.
But the lack of a good water source to irrigate his one hectare (2.47 acres) of land left him dependent on erratic rainfall to grow his mustard crop, the 65-year-old said.
“Sometimes a heavy downpour and hailstones would destroy my field crops, and at other times (they) would fail due to water scarcity,” he said. ....
