Nepal, India PMs likely to jointly inaugurate cross-border railway link

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is likely to visit India for a three-day trip on April 1.

This will be his first official bilateral visit since he assumed the Prime Minister’s office in July last year.

However, there has not been any official announcement from either side.

As per sources, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Nepali PM will jointly inaugurate the Kurtha-Jaynagar Railway on April 2 in New Delhi.

The train service would cover a distance of 35 kilometres from Jayanagar in India's Bihar state to Kurtha in Janakpur, Nepal. ....

Asserting that railway linking will help in the "rapid shrinking of South Asia's geography", India’s foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla announced that India will soon be connected with Nepal with two railway links while Bangladesh will be linked with six rail links.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Training Module on India’s Neighbourhood at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, the foreign secretary emphasised on the role of connectivity in the region. ....

The Indian government has spent nearly ₹550 crores to extend 17 km of the 68.72 km Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas railway project to improve rail connectivity between India and Nepal.
The section of the railway project that runs from Madhubani district s Jayanagar (Bihar) to Kurtha in Nepal will be extended up to Bijalpura, which is further 17 km from Kurtha. The project will be ready by March 2021. Jayanagar is only 4 Km from the India-Nepal border.
