Surf lifesavers from around the South Island tested their skills on and off the water in a fun-filled competition in Nelson. Tāhunanui Beach hosted the annual Nelson Tasman surf carnival event on Saturday and Sunday, featuring junior and senior surf sport events from IRB racing, beach sprints and flag races, ski races to surf lifeguard award tests. The competition drew surf lifesavers from the Nelson club as well as Marlborough’s Rarangi SLSC, Kotuku SLSC from Greymouth and Canterbury clubs Waimairi and North Beach. ....
People enjoy a sunny day in the sea at Tahunanui Beach. The 2021 carnival is a clear signal summer is in full swing and the need for care in the water. The public can expect to see lifeguards on duty at Tahuna each weekend and on public holidays until the end of March. Patrols are scheduled for Saturdays (1-5pm) and Sundays along with public holidays (10am-5pm) up until the end of January. From then on, patrols will run on Sundays and public holidays only between 10am and 5pm. Nelson SLSC captain Aaron Lyttle said overall behaviour had been good so far with no major emergencies and requests for assistance coming more from shell cuts or lost kids than swimmers in danger. ....
