It is a privilege to share my father’s World War II story. Jack Walker was proud of his World War II service and 28-year naval career. Like most veterans, he was humble about his contributions and did not talk much about his war experiences. But as we both got older, I asked more questions and he became more interested in telling his story. This story is based on my father’s memories, original source material left to me by my father, reference books in my possession, and Internet research.
Starting Out
Like many of his generation, Jack Walker was a product of the Depression. Born in 1923 in Michigan, he graduated from high school into an uncertain future. He was working for the telephone company when World War II gave him and millions of others an opportunity to serve and create a future with careers not thought possible before the war. ....
