word in the show about it. iwo jima is history. take you so much for being with us, george colburn. as part of his documentary, navajo code talker in their own words samuel tso. in 1937 in the fall i was sent off to high school. and when i got sent off to high school i never went back home because my parents were so poor they could not come pick me up. i stayed at the school all 4 years and they worked as a sheepherder for the government during the summer. that is how come i stayed over there. right after graduation when we finished high school my parents did not come over. some of the other people that i graduated with, their parents came, but me, i was all alone. the federal government i thought would take me home but they never did. they only told me that there is a road done that way, you go down there. there are cities down there, you find a job down there. so, i picked up my suitcase and went down the road. i went to the highway in my suitcase was in my way so i hid

something that a marine would never do, and that s shoot another marine. it just wasn t possible for a marine to think in those terms. just to be sure, i interviewed the chief historian at the time of the marine corps, and he said, there could have been no order for someone to kill another marine to keep the japanese from capturing a marine. so it was implausible. so the code talkers were not happy about the film, and the attorney for the code talker association and i went to mgm and tried to get them to fund a documentary, and they did not fund the but they gave a gift to the code talkers, a substantial gift to them. so it came about to try and get the true story out there about who the code talkers were, what their mission was. you interviewed them here in the u.s., and then you traveled where? well, we were fortunate, thanks to the legislature in the state of new mexico and the governor at the time, bill richardson, to get adequate funding to take all to take six c

that type of thing. being far away from the mainland of the usa, i m introducing myself as samuel sandoval, and i d like to express my personal life, my own person, my mind, everything i say, everything i see. and within the heart, there are some deep feelings that comes back with me. and i might say that it is emotional to see one of our comrades name on this memorial here. it hits at time, but i got to learn as a person that we depend on the higher power. and as a traditional way, i was taught by my great-great-grandfather, and he was one of the warriors. we lived with him as a child. i learned love and discipline from him. you are growing up into the world, and i didn t know what he was mean. this is what it meant to me today. but when he tried to tell me the traditional way of living for the future, i said, that s for you, grandpa, not for me. today i regret it, and i love that man. and today i m honored to be here. the first day on this land, on this island, it seemed
