After losing 1-0 to hosts Cameroon in the opening match of the tournament on Saturday, the locally based band of Warriors needed to avoid defeat in their second match to keep their hopes of reaching the quarterfinals alive. In the end, it was Burkina Faso who were celebrating as they revived their hopes of reaching the quarter finals with a comfortable win over a depleted Warriors side which was missing several key players due to injuries and illness after the opening match.

Despite frustrating their more fancied opponents for long periods in the opening match of the tournament Zimbabwe were undone by Solomon Banga’s acrobatic finish after 72 minutes to suffer a narrow 1-0 defeat to hosts Cameroon. The Warriors will however take pride in how they countered and faced Cameroon as they prepare for the next games against Mali and Burkina Faso Wednesday and Sunday respectively.

Organisers remain confident of staging the women’s event at a later date with this spring or early summer viewed as a possible new timeframe. The women’s and under-20 tournaments were scheduled to take place alongside the men’s competition, is due to run from February 6 to March 20. In a statement, Six Nations Rugby confirmed it would finalise the timing and formats for both the women’s and under-20s events in consultation with unions in the hope of announcing full details by the end of this month.
