The 1002 area covers 1. 57 million acres of land in northeast alaska within the nonwilderness portion. You bring it over here, sean. Within the nonwilderness portion of an war. And i think its important to put this in context in terms of the areas we are talking about. Anwar itself is 19 million acres. Approximately the size of south carolina. The nonwilderness area, is approximately the size of delaware. The area here is designated as federal wilderness. So when were talking about anwr itself, i think its importedant to recognize there are parts that are designated as wilderness, parts within the refuge and parts, the 1002 area specifically been designated for consideration for oil and Gas Exploration. Series of these interfaith lecture series here in the hall of philosophy. Im especially pleased that diane winston, who holds the night chair in media and religion at the school, is here with us. I dont know how many of you know about journalism education, but to hold a night chair, that is like the nobel prize in journalism education, so we are glad diane is here. I will talk more about her in just a moment in her topic, but i will spend just a moment, as i traditionally do, setting up this discussion series and how it fits into the rest of the programming we are having this week. An underlying theme we have been having, a background presence for all the discussions in the amphitheater, here in the hall of philosophy, and Panel Discussions, has been how the News Business and Civic Society can do its part, the News Business do as part, to give us the information and values and perspective we need as a Democratic Society to find our way. Parks service. Were here to talk about the service at its history and also learn more about the special house and people who lived here and how its being preserved by the National Parks service. Were joined by robert stanton. Biez, the former site manager here at arlington house. Obviously a park service employee. Hes also oversees a year long renovation of the estate. Let me start with the story of how the National Park service began. As the National Park service was authorized by an act of congress, signed into law by president woodrow wilson, august 25, 1916. There we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park service today. And that legislation came about through the stellar efforts of many conservationists and civil leaders throughout the country. Was it at all controversial at the time it was signed into law .
