Eastern Cape was justified to close beaches, now targets gatherings at rivers, dams and streams


The Eastern Cape government has welcomed a decision by the Pretoria High Court to dismiss an application by the DA-run Kouga Local Municipality to open beaches in the province.
This comes after the municipality took the provincial government’s decision to close off beaches to court to challenge its rationality.
Eastern Cape government spokesperson Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said the joint application by the Kouga Local Municipality, Great Brak River Business Forum and businessperson Louis Cook was nothing but a political prank.
“The decision of the court affirms not only the constitutionality of our decision as government to close our beaches in order to protect our people from contracting the virus, but also sends a strong message to any person who wants to undermine this decision.” ....

CAPE TOWN - Health authorities in the Eastern Cape say they were cautiously optimistic about a decline in COVID -19 infection rates.
The provincial health department is on Monday reporting a 31% drop week-on-week in new infections.
But more than 1,800 people are still in hospital being treated for COVID-19.
President Cyril Ramaphosa declared Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman districts hotspots and put in place further restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.
Provincial health authorities say there’d been a marked decrease in new COVID-19 cases being reported in hotspot areas. ....

Eastern Cape urged not to be complacent as Covid-19 cases show slight decline


The Eastern Cape provincial government has called on its citizens to not let their guard down even as there are reports of a decrease in Covid-19 cases in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro and Sarah Baartman District Municipality.
Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha, spokesperson for Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane, said when infections in Nelson Mandela Bay and Sarah Baartman started rising, the provincial government focused on mitigation efforts in these areas to contain the virus and lower the rate of transmission.
Sicwetsha said the efforts were starting to pay off, but warned against complacency.
The reduced numbers of Covid-19 cases in the two areas are a welcome relief, especially after reports that the virus has mutated and a new strain has since been the driving force behind the second wave of infections sweeping through the Eastern Cape and the rest of the country. ....
