The DA in the Eastern Cape is fighting tooth and nail to have the province’s beaches opened during the festive season. The party fears that the closure of the beaches will have a negative impact on tourism in the province.
On Monday President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that all the beaches in the province would be closed in order to stop the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.
The Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and Gauteng are leading in infections as the second wave of the virus hits the country.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, the Sarah Baartman District Municipality in the Eastern Cape and the Garden Route in the Western Cape, have been declared Covid-19 hotspots. ....

Non-adherence to lockdown regulation could trigger the closure of beaches in the Western Cape, Police Minister Bheki Cele warned.
Cele visited various Cape Town beaches on Wednesday to assess compliance.
The visit came as Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal beaches were bereft of holidaymakers due to lockdown regulations.
Non-compliance with Covid-19 regulations could see the closure of Western Cape beaches, Police Minister Bheki Cele has warned.
Cele visited beaches in Cape Town on Wednesday to ensure beachgoers were adhering to Covid-19 regulations. He visited Strand, Macassar, Monwabisi, Mnandi, Strandfontein, Muizenberg, Camps Bay, Clifton and Big Bay beaches.
Accompanied by police management, Cele s day-long visit to various beaches included the inspection of operational deployments as well as the assessment of adherence to lockdown regulations. ....

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane on Sunday announced that to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus in the province, beaches during the festive season will be closed.
Mabuyane’s spokesperson Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha said provincial government and its municipalities took the decision to close beaches and parks as they pose a great risk of spreading the coronavirus infections.
