Maharashtra covid update: Maharashtra reported a rise in COVID-19 cases with 87 new infections and two deaths on Wednesday. Mumbai contributed 19 cases, while Pune city and Sangli district each reported a fatality. The state recorded 37 cases the previous day, but the number surged to 267 between December 21 and 27, including 10 cases of the new JN.1 variant of the Omicron variant. In response, the Maharashtra government established a new Covid task force led by Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar, former head of epidemiology at the Indian Council of Medical Research.
