Credit MSU Athletics Morehead State head men s basketball coach Preston Spradlin has been named a finalist of another head coaching award by CollegeInsider.com, the Jim Phelan Award. The award is bestowed upon the nation s top Division I head coach. The Jim Phelan Award is named in honor of a legendary bow-tied coach who spent his entire career at Mount Saint Mary s University. He led the Mountaineers to the 1962 NCAA Men s Division II Basketball Championship. When he retired in 2003, after coaching for 49 years, he had amassed 830 wins (overall record of 830-524) in all divisions. In those 49 years, 19 of his teams amassed 20 or more wins in a season. ....
Credit MSU Athletics Belmont s Grayson Murphy hit a three-pointer with three seconds left in regulation to force overtime, but Morehead State hit 13 of 14 free throws in the extra period as the Eagle men s basketball team ended the regular season with an 89-82 victory over the Bruins at Johnson Arena Saturday afternoon. The Eagles finished the regular season at 20-7 and 17-3 in the OVC, just a game behind Belmont (24-3/18-2 OVC). It marks just the eighth 20-win season in program history, while the 17 league triumphs are a school record. It also marked just the third-ever win for MSU over the Bruin program and head coach Preston Spradlin s first over Belmont. ....

But the 6-10 Florida native showed little rust Saturday as the three-time OVC Freshman of the Week produced 14 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks to pace the Morehead State men s basketball team to a 56-55 edging of Jacksonville State at Johnson Arena. The Eagles (7-6/4-2 OVC) survived a late charge from the Gamecocks after leading by double digits (7-4/3-2 OVC) as they won over JSU at home for the first time in five tries. The victory also halted an overall seven-game unsuccessful streak against JSU. ....
Morehead State junior guard Skyelar Potter has been voted as the OVC Newcomer of the week. Potter, a transfer from Wright State from Bowling Green, Ky., earned his first-ever OVC weekly award, giving MSU four league honors this season (Johni Broome has three Freshman of the Week accolades). That is the most awards for the program in a single season since Kenneth Faried and Demonte Harper combined for nine in 2010-11. Potter scored a career-high 22 points in the Eagles game at then No. 24 Clemson on Dec. 21. His point total, five three-pointers swished and 7-for-10 field goal percentage are the best for an individual opponent against Clemson this season. ....
