Still, authorities caution there is a long way to go. australia s top air accident investigator now saying the cost of a prolonged search could reach a quarter of a billion dollars if more private equipment is needed. miguel marquez joins us from perth with the latest. good morning, miguel. reporter: good morning there, carol. those discussions will be happening between all the countries involved. there is no indication that any country wants to give up this search. in fact, they are doubling down on it. the blue fin going down, we believe, for its fourth dive now to search for another 16 hours and then do another data dump. all of those resources are still up on the ocean. the ships on the surface of the ocean responding to what the pos ioedon see from the air and the p-3s what they see from the air. those ships can be directed anything they see on the ocean surface. a very big load of families that the oil was found not to be that ....

Top of the ocean. do you think that s the airborne search for that? well, i think, you know, we already touched upon today. you got the pas, p3s and the 76ers. the authority has planned a visual search area totaling the center of the search area lies approximately 2200 kilometers northwest of perth, is what they re saying. but so, even the visual search area appears to be expanding. yeah. i mean, the crews will be searching a specific area and then eliminate that and then using modeling and information data from the people who are all over the currents and the tidal flows. that s the way it will be working. it s incredibly complex just because they search a specific area doesn t necessarily mean the area will contrast, which is the area is so huge. and again, they re going back to the remodeling days for the miramar and everything else, there are so many factors to pull in. so i think what we shouldn t do ....

Up sound from juunderneath the water. how hopeful should we be? well, carol, i m very hopeful that they are on the right place now. when you look at the accumulation of evidence and the repeated pings that all match, all the specifications we expect, i am confident they are on the right place. the fact that the p-3s now think they may have picked up something is even better news. that means the batteries are still alive. and it lets them refine the area they re going to have to look on the ocean bottom even better because it s a small area. but the smaller they get it, the faster the rest of the bottom search will be able to proceed. so fred, why can t they find debris? from what i understand, one, we don t know how the plane went into the water. but from what i also understand, there was a pretty strong storm several days after the plane went down. so that debris, along with the storm and with the currents, could really be hundreds and ....

Vicinity of the ocean shield from sonar bouys that were deployed. the acoustic data will need to be analyzed overnight but it is promising. now, in addition to that very sensitive work that the ocean shield is carrying out with that american-provided towed ping locator combing the water trying to pick up on the pings, they deployed these p-3s capable of deploying 80 at a time, capable of detecting possible pings in the surrounding areas. this is significant because it tells officials here in australia that the batteries at this point they say are most likely associated with the black box pinger have not died. they are still deteching these pings that means they are getting more information to be able to narrow down a potential search field. and that s important for them to deploy the underwater autonomous vehicle on board that ocean ....

Marshal houston s press conference, i was more cautious than optimistic. today, having heard what the air chief marshal has said, i m definitely more optimistic than cautious. and i think there is very good reason for that. however, we still need to identify a debris field, whether it be on the surface, by the p-8s, the p-3s, or with the auvs on the ocean bed. i still think we ve got at least two to three days to go, having spoken to commander william marks earlier on about an hour ago. they ve got to go and do three runs before they can triangulate and fix this point. and those runs take a long time. and les, this question is for you. errol here. what do you make of the announcement that angus houston made? he has not confirmed this is mh 370, the detection, the second detection, the two audio signals, he is getting as close as possible to confirming it, ....
